This demo will be updated after the voting period to fix many issues!

Please be patient with some of the bugs, there's two detailed levels with two unique bosses to fight!

In the old west, towns across the vast escapes have been corrupted with death. You play as Dynamite Deadlington, a fierce half-gunslinger, half-ghost. Your job is to clear these towns of rotting mass and restore it to a (somewhat) liveable state

Development Notes (Help & Tips) (AVOID BROWSER VERSION)

  • If you get stuck in Stickstead due to the respawning, please restart the game. We know this sucks, but the game is quite short for now!
  • You must HOLD E to enter or exit rooms
  • Defeat the first boss (in Level One, top left) to unlock the Soul Scale abilities.
  • The first boss throws items at you - throw them back by pressing E as they come near. Dont spam shoot her, she will summon the dead!
  • Enemies in Stickstead may be invincible until you defeat Hotel Hunger (level one).
  • Watch your dial, you die if it becomes too orange, too blue, or you lose your health!
  • The number in the bottom left is your total ammo for that weapon category. The bullet icons are the ammo you have loaded into your weapon.
  • In Level Two, the door doesn't reopen at the end of the bossfight. If you let the bookshelves crush you, you'll respawn outside the door.
  • Remember to use your skill points at the Well of Souls in Stickstead to enhance your abilities (such as shooting through multiple enemies).
  • The crosshair in the browser version is for some reason very large and out of place, please use the downloadable version.
  • Melee Weapons are unfinished as our priority was gunplay. Still, the knife can one-shot the basic undead if you stand back and left click. (There's a known bug with this)
  • We have a whole list of bugs to fix, if you spot anything weird or out of place, there's no harm in reporting it to us in the comments. We'll get it sorted after the Jam.

There are a lot of overlapping mechanics in Defiled West and we have been occupied with University commitments - please be patient with any issues you may find!

Created by Marshs & Tbage for the NSE Unidays Games Innovation Challenge in just under 6 weeks.

Starting in the old town of Stickstead, complete two of six unique levels by clearing them of the damned. Encounter Undead, Ghosts, two unique bosses and various other threats along the way.

Indulge in four unique weapons while you keep careful control of your Soul Scale. Kill too many enemies and you may succumb to your wounds. Take too much damage and you may become Spectralised.

The demo contains 6 abilities per scale, with two upgrades available each. In this version, you'll be able to unlock 12 abilities and 24 upgrades.

Thanks for taking a look, we hope you follow the project and see where it goes! The full version is planned for Steam, but the Itch version will receive a finished Stickstead town past the gamejam's release.

Short overview of the vision for the game:

Multiple unique towns to explore, each with their own buildings to clear, their own boss fights and enemies to conquer.

  • Various weapon types and variants - melee and ranged.
  • More unique sounds and soundtracks to fit every scenario
  • Redesigned, grungy world art and animations
  • An advanced soul scale system, working your way across the county to build your skills and condemn the dead to their rightful place among the dirt.

I struggled a bit at the beginning to understand how to enter the first level; when we have our weapon in hand, we can't access it, nothing happens!

Otherwise, overall, the game is cool. I would love to have some narration similar to Hotline Miami! (Didn't had the time to play for a long period, so if there is i may have missed it)

I dont think its weapon based, i think its because you need to hold E and we forgot to specify. Let us know if it persists (if you try again!) Thanks for playing

(edit, this issue has been fixed and will be published when the jam is over :) )
